An Extra Guide To Baseboard Installation (Aesthetically)

If you have picked yourself a perfect design, it’s time to move to the installation. While calling an expert is often a no-brainer, however, you can follow the DIY route and save yourself a lot of money. So, where to start? The answer’s right here, with my detailed instructions.

Preparation

First and foremost, you will need to assemble the following tools and materials.

  • Baseboard
  • Wood filler
  • Caulk
  • Nails
  • T-square
  • Caulk gun
  • Nail gun and compressor

Instructions

Prior to the installation, it’s vital to draw your bathroom’s floor plan and make measurements. You will also want to label the cut baseboards according to the plan so as to avoid confusion since the boards can look pretty much the same. Once done, jump into the first step.

Step 1: Cut The Baseboards

The rule of thumb: you will always start with the longest wall and gradually work your way till you reach the starting point. Indeed, the chances are that you will have to go on with another board or meet corners.

To achieve a seamless transition, here’s a brief guide on how to cut the boards.

With Scarf Joints

Adjust the bevel angle to 45 degrees. Start with a cut at the end of one board, then the start of the other, and the two pieces should fit perfectly.

With Inside Corner Joints

The miter angle will stay at 0. Cut the first board at a bevel angle of 45 degrees, tilted left. On the other hand, tilt the saw right and make another cut for the second board, again, at 45 degrees.

Do the opposite regarding inside corner joints.

Step 2: Attach The Baseboards

Now, you have your floor plan and the cut baseboards labeled with measurements at hand, it is time to put them into place. With a nail gun, shoot nails along the bottom of the boards and give them a push down with your hand. Then, finish off with the top part.

Note: For aesthetic purposes, you will want to hide the joint behind your bathroom fixtures (a sink or a toilet, for instance). This is why pre-measurements are of utmost importance.

Step 3: Fill The Gaps

Next, you will cover the nail holes with wood filler. After that, caulk over the joints and the top of the baseboards. Note that only paintable caulk should be used.

Step 4: Paint

Finish the process with some layers of trim paint, and you are good to go.
